The UK external SSD market experienced notable
year-on-year volume contractions across the retail channel throughout
the first half of 2026. Growth in high-capacity segments and
next-generation interfaces, however, indicates that while consumers
may be buying fewer drives overall, they are prioritising
higher-performance and larger-capacity solutions.
Capacity: The 1TB Standard Holds, the 4TB Segment Earns
The 1TB (1024GB) capacity remains the entrenched market standard,
accounting for 51.8% of all units sold in Q2 2026.
The 4TB (4096GB) segment tells a different story.
Despite capturing a smaller unit share, it is proving highly
lucrative, commanding 25.9% of total revenue share in Q2 2026. While
most capacities saw declining revenues year-on-year in that quarter,
the 4TB segment demonstrated significant resilience, posting a 12.8%
revenue increase.
Interfaces: Legacy Decline, New Standards
Rising
USB 3.1 still held the largest unit share in Q2
2026, at 45.9%, but it is rapidly losing ground, experiencing a steep
48.7% year-on-year drop in the same quarter.
USB 3.2 has grown to capture 35.8% of the market.
NVMe Gen4 is gaining steady traction, reaching a 14.0% unit share in
Q2 2026, and stood out with 16.7% year-on-year unit growth during that
period, highlighting sustained demand for high-end internal storage components.
Strategic Outlook
Retailers and resellers should adapt to the
shrinking overall volume by focusing on the premium margins offered by
4TB drives. Inventory strategies should prioritise stocking modern,
faster interfaces such as NVMe Gen4 and USB 3.2, which are
successfully defying the broader market downturn.
